Aug 2015 - Gozo Ceramics Festival

The 3rd edition of the Gozo Ceramics Festival will be held tomorrow 1st August, from 7pm onwards, in Xlendi.  The festival is a unique occasion where ceramic artists, from the fine arts field as well as skilled craftsmen, demonstrate their talents and skills in public. It is also an exhibition of ceramic artworks on the artists’ individual stands.

During the inauguration, the Minister for Gozo Anton Refalo thanked the organisers and augured that this year’s edition will again be as successful as the previous editions held.  Minister Refalo stated that the festival is being held in collaboration between the Munxar Local Council and the Culture Office within the Ministry of Gozo. He stated that, like past editions, this activity will attract a large number of Gozitans, Maltese and even visitors who are currently on our islands.

Minister Refalo said that apart from the variety of exhibitions, there will also be a fjakkolata, live music from local bands and the recently restored underground grain mill and silos will also be open for the public.

He highlighted the fact that this acitivity will continue to promote and encourage internal tourism and more Maltese will spend their weekend in Gozo. Activities like this, he continued, can be advertised abroad to open a niche for tourism towards Gozo.

Minister Anton Refalo thanked the Local Council of Munxar for the invaluable work being done in Xlendi, and all those who contributed towards making the Gozo Ceramics Festival a success.
Joan Haber, the co-ordinator of the festival, gave an overview of the program.  The activities include; animation for children, a space for hands on experience with clay, a ceramic installation on the sand, throwing by one of the most experienced throwers in Malta, Michael Ciappara,  a live demonstration on a kick-wheel by John Giordmaina.   The festival will also feature established artists namely; Sina Farrugia Micallef, Charles and Mario Sammut, Antoine Paul Camilleri, Victor Agius, Alfred Aquilina and Hermine Ann Sammut, and, on the quay, there will be an exhibition of large works by Paul Haber.  To complete the atmosphere there will be a Jazz Band composed of the trio Godwin Lucas, Joe Micallef and Mark Galea.

All of the above happens this Saturday, 1st August, in a torch lit environment embellished with the sparkling stars of magical Xlendi.
