Spring Home Exhibition 2010 evolves towards ecology

All across the world, in every kind of environment and region known to man, increasingly dangerous weather patterns and devastating storms are abruptly putting an end to the long-running debate over whether or not climate change is real. Not only is it real, it's here, and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster. (Barack Obama)

Today the Climate Change issue has become a top of the agenda item for world leaders, and in recent large scale meetings, it has become clear that serious action is required to ensure that, what has been predicted doesn’t become the reality.  The damage our planet suffers because of careless use of resources has to reach the masses, so everyone can do his/her part, before it is too late.

In principle what is stated above seems easy to deliver.  However to actually motivate the consumer to change habits of consumption is a different story.  Consumers need to become more ecological in consumption, because every country is duty bound to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to safeguard the world for future generations.  Although this might seem too technical and lengthy a process, we consumers need to understand that we have an important role to play.  The choices we make in our daily consumption are related to carbon emissions.  How do we heat our water, what type of bulb we switch on in the living room, how do we save on use of energy are all related to this global movement to safeguard our world.

David Suzuki, from the David Suzuki Foundation, which is a science based Canadian environmental organisation, working to protect the balance of nature and our quality of life, says; We are upsetting the atmosphere upon which all life depends. In the late 80s when I began to take climate change seriously, we referred to global warming as a “slowmotion catastrophe” one we expected to kick in perhaps generations later. Instead, the signs of change have accelerated alarmingly. This is why we need to start acting.

This year’s Spring Home Exhibition has evolved to include this aspect.  The ecological consciousness of this exhibition will provide a large showcase of all the items that can help us become more ecological in consumption and the educational aspect will help us learn about why we need to start using these products.

The Spring Eco Home Exhibition will be held at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre, MFCC, Ta’Qali, between Thursday 18th and Sunday 21st March.  It is supported by the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs.
